Civil Engineering

About

Established in the academic year of 2000/2001, the Department of Civil Engineering was one of the first three departments that were initiated by the Faculty of Engineering at Misurata University. The Department offers Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) and Master of Science (M.Sc.) degrees in Civil Engineering and aims to bring up qualified graduates, who possess all the necessary information in this field. The department was established as a response to the demand of Misurata city and the neighboring districts for civil engineers in the different fields such as constructions, transportation, water and environmental engineering, etc.
Indeed, the department has had a positive impact on the different organizations and companies where many graduates of the department have worked and contributed in the ongoing construction and development projects. The demand for civil engineers by those companies is increasing due to the continuous growth of the region. Hence, the department plays an essential and crucial role in the community and in an increasing manner as the community continuous to develop and grow.
Students can join the department after passing the following courses: Engineering Mechanics 1, Math 1, Physics 1, and Engineering Drawing. The study program in the department consists of four branches of which, in the last two semesters, students can choose one from, these branches are:
1. Structure and Foundation Engineering.
2. Transportation and Survey Engineering.
3. Water Resources and Environmental Engineering.
4. Construction Engineering and Management.
The students obtain a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering after passing 154 units including a graduation project in one of the four branches.
The department has full time faculty members in all four branches, as well as a cadre of technical engineers that occupies the five laboratories of civil engineering; which are: concrete technology lab, soil mechanics lab, highway lab, survey lab, and fluid mechanics lab.

Mission

The Department seeks to help the student to gain the necessary skills that will put him/her in the right track to become a Professional Civil Engineer, very rewarding career where he will have the opportunity to have a significant impact on the quality of life of the communities around him. Student will accomplish this by participating in the development of projects that maintain and build on the transportation systems, provide water resources to entire communities, design and construct buildings that house hospitals, schools and many other critical infrastructure systems. He will learn how to engineer all of these challenging projects while protecting the environment through sustainability principles using the latest materials, technologies and construction methods.

Goals

1. Graduating civil engineers with modern knowledge of the field to contribute in creating and completing engineering projects according to their investment strategies.
2. Graduating engineers with higher degrees to contribute in developing and leading research and educational institutions, and pursuing the scientific progress in the field.
3. Using scientific methods and new technologies in studying, assessing, and executing engineering projects for both private and public organizations.
4. Training the engineering cadres in the governmental institutions and private companies in order to disseminate newest international technologies in those organizations.
5. Sustaining and nourishing scientific and research relationships between the department and its peer departments, locally and internationally, in order to disseminate knowledge, exchanging scientific expertise, training students and technicians, etc.
6. Providing different consultancy services and technical and feasibility studies via the Department and the engineering consultancy office for public and private organizations.

principles

1. Effort, hard work, and commitment.
2. Exploration and creativity.
3. Honesty and integrity.
4. Proficiency and efficiency.
5. Transparency and credibility.
6. Leadership, initiative, and innovation.
7. Academic diversity.
8. Teamwork and mutual respect.

Vision

The Department strives to graduate highly qualified civil engineers with leadership and innovative capabilities, using technology and modern innovations, developing research, implementation and practice techniques, and disseminating knowledge and performing research, studies, and practical experiments. In addition, providing all consultancy services related to the different civil engineering aspects.

Mechanical Engineering

About

Mechanical Engineering Department is one of the pioneering departments at the Faculty of Engineering. The department started functioning with the opening of the faculty in the year 2000. Currently, there is the Mechanical Power Section in the department which is concerned with everything related to energy and its technologies. In this section, students are taught the principles of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, refrigeration and air conditioning, power plants, internal combustion engines, solar energy, wind energy, desalination, pumps, compressors, etc. Moreover, the department is planning to provide other specializations such as Applied Mechanics, which is concerned with the design, elements, and control technologies of machines, study and analysis of vibrations in addition to computer-aided design.
Mechanical Engineering Department initiated the Postgraduate Program, in Mechanical Power, in 2003. Some graduates of this program became faculty members at the Faculty of Engineering, others work in other educational or engineering sectors.

Mission

The mission of the department generally includes the following themes:
1. Educational Mission: To provide students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, with a high level of academic experience to make them capable of competing and leading in different work areas.
2. Research Mission: To develop and improve research and innovative abilities of engineering science through encouraging students to present research papers in some disciplines from the first to the final stages of education, so they can make use of the latest data collecting technologies, such as the Internet and the electronic library.
3. Service Mission: To provide engineering consultations and specialized courses for community service and improving the skills of technicians, administrators, and engineers in the fields of industry, services and environment projects at the local and regional levels.

Vision

Mechanical Engineering Department seeks to achieve scientific and technological leadership at the level of Libya through establishing comprehensive programs that keep pace with the international scientific and technological developments in the field of mechanical engineering. Therefore, there are serious studies by the board of the department to include other disciplines that keep pace with the advanced technological development in the world, such as nanotechnology, biomechanics, mechatronics.
